ARIANA AFGHAN AIRLINES
(Afghanistan)

Ariana Afghan Airlines was once a prospering flag carrier but suffered a lot from the political situation in the country. On October 5th 1979, a single DC-10-30 with the registration, YA-LAS (291) was added to the fleet and replaced a Boeing 720 on the „Marco Polo“ route from India via Kabul to Europe. During the Soviet occupation in 1985, the civil aviation flights were almost impossible what brought the airline industry in Afghanistan to a collapse. Ariana had to cancel a large number of destinations including the whole European network. The following governments, especially the Taliban, made the social, political and economical situation even worse. Now, the airline is flying again with a very old A300B4, some AN24 aircraft which survived the war and a couple of ex-AA 727-200.
