ECUATORIANA
(Ecuador)

When some airlines started to phase out their DC-10s in the early 1980s, Ecuatoriana took its chance and leased a DC-10 from Swissair via Aeronautics&Astronautics. #57, Swissairs first DC-10 and one of the first DC-10-30s, joined a fleet of 707s and 720s on September 2nd 1983, becoming the first widebody aircraft in Ecuador. The DC-10 was the proud of the airline and was used on the routes to the USA as well as some routes in South America. In 1994, the airline collapsed and ceased all operations. The DC-10 was retained as only aircraft and stored in Latacunga until brazilian carrier VASP breathed new life into the dormant ecuatorian carrier and reactivated the DC-10 purchasing large parts of the airline's stock. For a short time, a second DC-10 #84 was leased from Skyjet. Also VASP was a victim of bad management and so Ecuatoriana was closed in 2000. The sole DC-10 was broken up in Quito less than a year later.
