JAS - JAPAN AIR SYSTEM
(Japan)

The third force in Japan is JAS - Japan Air System, formerly known as TOA - Domestic Airlines. When the airline got its first international routes, it was obvious that a long-range aircraft was needed. The DC-10 was the first choice as the new aircraft type enabled a growth of capacity compared with the only other widebody type in the fleet, the A300. JAS two DC-10-30s are one of the last ones produced (only nine aircraft are younger!) and introduced in 1988 - 18 years after the first flight of N10DC. The DC-10s were used mainly on the busy routes between Tokyo and larger cities as Okinawa, Fukuoka and Sapporo, but later also served the Honolulu route. Shortly after the introduction of the first DC-10, TOA Domestic Airlines changed its name to JAS - Japan Air System on April 1st 1988. The 777 took over the DC-10 routes and the two DC-10s were transferred Harlequin Air, JAS holiday charter subsidiary and serve Hawaii, the US west coast and some destinations in the Pacific. Both companies are history, as Japan Air Lines took over JAS in 2002.
