ONA - OVERSEAS NATIONAL AIRWAYS
Concerning the DC-10, this airline is something like a mysterium. Once one of the world's largest charter and contract carriers, the airline was an early costumer for the DC-10-30F (CF) and took delivery of the first aircraft on April 21st 1973. A second one followed on June 25th, but both aircraft were lost within seven weeks in the winter of 1975/6. One of them overran the runway in Istanbul while on wet-lease to Saudia. Three replacement aircraft were ordered, two of which were delivered int 1977. The third aircraft was scheduled to be delivered on September 8th of 1978, but the airline ceased the operations a day before. Mysteriously, the two delivered aircraft were later written off too. One, N1033F, #237, with Korean Air Lines on the day before Christmas Eve of 1983, the other one,N1034F, #238, with Spantax on September 13th 1982. Of all DC-10s which ever had contact with ONA, only N1035F, #257, which never made a single flight for the airline, survived and is actually a freighter with FedEx. At the time of ceasing operations, ONA operated two other Douglas products, the DC-8 and the DC-9.
