ZAMBIA AIRWAYS
In 1984, Zambia Airways introduced the first widebody aircraft in its fleet with the leasing of a new DC-10-30 from IACO for fifteen years. This aircraft, 348 (Nkwazi), was originally ordered by Egyptair, but canceled, so that Zambia Airways took the chance to obtain a replacement for the 707. The DC-10 took over the prestige routes from the mentioned type and flew from its home base in Lusaka to several destinations in Europe and New York / JFK.
On November 1989, a second aircraft was leased from Sabena for a short time bringing the all-time fleet to 2 aircraft. The heavy financial losses in the early 1990s forced the Zambian government to close its airline and so the last service was flown in December of 1994. The IACO DC-10 was repossessed by the lessor and flew for a more profitable carrier.
