Wet-lease and charter carrier World Airways became a very important Operator of the DC-10 as this airline operated its Douglas trijets for large numbers of airlines all over the World. The first DC-10s, all DC-10-30CFs, arrived on March 7th 1978 and joined a fleet of 747s and DC-8-63s. A year later, on April 12th 1979, the airline introduced also scheduled services between Newark and Oakland, also serving Los Angeles and Baltimore and international services to London/Gatwick. Soon afterwards, the DC-10s were grounded for five weeks which was catastrophic for World Airways, together with the employee strike from August to December and the high competition from the larger US carriers. During the 1980s, several DC-10s of the series 10 and 30 were added and sold which contributed to the large movement in World Airways’ fleet and to the total number of 42 operated aircraft. In the meanwhile, the scheduled services ere given up, so that World Airways still focuses on charter contracts. For a short time, only #446 (the last DC-10 built !) was active for World as one aircraft was stored and two (the two which were leased from Malaysia Airlines) were sold to Ghana Airways. A small wave of aircraft came in in the early 2000s when several aircraft joined the fleet. However, most of them were sold later to ther carriers or stored after only a short time in service. Now, only three aircraft (including one pax aircraft), remain in service.
