AIR LIB
(France)

Air Lib resulted as a merger of Air Liberté and AOM French Airlines on September 22nd 2001. Both airlines focused on long-range flights to French overseas territories and other long-range destinations as well as a couple of domestic and European flights. AOM already had a large history in operating DC-10 aircraft as itself was a result of two DC-10 operators (Minerve and Air Outre Mèr). Most of the aircraft were originally operated by SAS, Finnair and Air Frances old rival UTA, which was acquired by AF in 1988. The role of Frances carrier number two is now the one of Air Lib which inherited also a fleet of MD-80 (AOM and Air Liberté) and A340 (AOM). As both airlines also brought some financial problems into the new carrier, some old DC-10 with many hours and cycles on the clock were phased out rapidly to cut costs. Long-term plans saw the A340 as a replacement for the DC-10-30, but after a long time of struggle, Air Lib closed its doors on February 6th 2003. The DC-10 era in France seems to be ended...
