CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS
(United Kingdom)

This airline has only a little to do with its famous cousin, British Caledonian Airways. British Caledonian Airways' name still had a good reputation in the United Kingdom, especially in Scotland, British Airways (which bought British Caledonian Airways in 1988) decided to give the "caledonian" name to its charter subsidiary British Airtours in 1994. A British Airways DC-10-30, which also was part of British Caledonian's fleet, supplemented a fleet of TriStars, 757s and A320s. The aircraft was mainly seen on the long-range routes to North America, Africa and the Far East where the TriStar lacked of range. Several DC-10s were leased for a short time for different sources, including Belgian wet-lease operator Challengair. When British Airways sold Caledonian Airways in 1997, the BA aircraft was returned to its owner and currently the fleet consists of two leased aircraft. They will be the sole long-range aircraft in the fleet of the newly-formed JMC Airlines (JMC stands for John Mason Cook), which is the amalgamation of Caledonian Airways and Flying Colors. During its short life, Caledonian Airways operated in total 8 DC-10s.
