GARUDA INDONESIA
Like other airlines in the Far East, Garuda Indonesia chose the DC-10-30 for services to Europe. The long relationship to KLM was used to lease an aircraft (PH-DTL) in October of 1973. Garuda was satisfied with this aircraft type and replaced it with six aircraft from an own order which entered service until 1979. Garuda’s DC-10s were not only used on the services to Europe (mainly Amsterdam), but also on inner-Asian services, high-density domestic routes and Hadj services. For the last mentioned purpose, Garuda leased DC-10s from several sources bringing the all-time fleet to 20 aircraft. In 1996, one of the original aircraft was lost in an accident in Japan when #284 (PK-GIE) burnt out after take-off in Fukuoka. Now, the MD-11 has taken over most of the DC-10 routes and so the older Douglas jets are used only on the inner-Asian services. In early 2003, it was announced that they will be replaced ba a larger number of 737 aircraft. Garuda’s current fleet consists of DC-10, MD-11, 737, A300, A330 and 747-400 aircraft.
