MALAYSIA AIRLINES
(Malaysia)

When the MSA consortium was dissolved in 1972, a part of the fleet went to the new formed Singapore Airlines. MAS - Malaysian Airline System, also new formed, had to order almost a whole new fleet and chose the 747-200, 737-200 and the A300 as new aircraft. Soon, the 747 proved to be too large for some routes and two DC-10-30 were ordered for larger Asian services (where the A300 lacked of range) and some European destinations. The first aircraft, #228, arrived on August 12th 1978, later supplemented by #350 in 1981. Anyway, this airline became number eight of the DC-10 operators. Not only the acquisition of new aircraft boosted the all-time-fleet, it was mainly the cooperation with World Airways which brought the fleet to 21 aircraft. Most of these were operated for a short time during Hadj season in a similar way Garuda did. The operations continued until 1999, when the last aircraft were returned. It is probably that also in the Hadj seasons of the new millennium the DC-10 will be part of the fleet of a short time so that the relation between DC-10 and Malaysia Airlines was finished. So Malaysian is kind of special among the DC-10 operators. Although the airlines operates the DC-10 routes with modern 777s and A330 now, year by year DC-10s join the fleet to connect Malaysia with the Islamic religious centrum in Saudi-Arabia.
